As you know, at Enduring Hope Ministries we are focused on providing women the “soul food” of life: Using God’s Word to equip and empower each and every one of us with the Word He breathed into what we know as the Bible. His Word provides our spirit the knowledge of our Creator, an understanding of His character, and hence, an understanding of His desires. His Word is exactly where we find our strength, our hope, and our purpose.
Without a doubt, at some point in your life you have asked yourself, or will ask yourself, the question: “What in the world am I doing here?” Or more accurately, “Who am I?” Our Identity (also defined by our purpose) is found in who Christ says we are; once we believe Him, then our purpose includes living out who He called us to be. This is the Master’s plan for our lives, which is first and foremost to prosper us and provide us with a purpose.
When I was asked to write on “purpose,” I was immediately reminded of a story I’ve often told over the past 12 years, which is both a testimony to God’s revelation and to His Glory. As an extremely successful business woman, I had my only daughter while in the middle of my “dream job.” Upon returning to work after my extended maternity/family leave, a resounding thought came upon me that first morning back: “I did not put you on this earth to sell software right now.” I had never “heard” God more clearly than that day. In fact, I had thought people were bonkers when they informed me that “God said to me…” or “God showed me…” This is the point I truly began to be a follower and not just a “fan”. * The purpose for my life at that time was to stay home and parent. This was only to be confirmed (and I glorify Him), when during the September 11, 2001 trade center bombings, my husband was in Manhattan working. I, because I chose to be obedient and stay home, was afforded the opportunity to be at my first Bible study during that intense day of complete panic and fear for his wellbeing. My purpose at that moment was clear.
Rick Warren wrote in his global blockbuster book The Purpose Driven Life, “You are alive because God wanted to create you!”** He wanted you to “be” here. Right now, at this time, in this city, with this family. Remember the story of Esther? “For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance shall arise for the Jews from elsewhere, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows but that you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this and for this very occasion?” (Esther 4:14 AMP)
You are not random, an accident, or a mistake! As His creation, you are always designed with a purpose in mind.
This month, as we spend some time discussing meaning, development and purpose, I would like to share with you how important it is to realize that there may not be just one single “purpose” for your life but many! Beloved, God has many plans for the many seasons of your life. His plan for you as a child may have been different than His purpose for you as an adolescent. The elderly, many of whom feel as though they have no life, do have a purpose, or God would not have them here! As you look back on your life, you may see how He used various encounters of your life to plant a seed in you or in someone you touched. Those encounters all have meaning and serve a purpose!
Spend time with Him, in His Word, and in quiet meditation. Ask Him to show you what He has for you today. Where He wants you to be. Then be patient – wait for Him to show you. He will. In a voice, in a thought, in a song, in a picture. He will show you your purpose for that day.
There is one surely defined purpose for His creation of people, and that is that we were made to love Him. (Lyrics to Toby Mac’ Made to Love Him)
The dream is fading
Now I’m staring at the door
I know it’s over cause my feet have hit the cold floor
Check my reflection
I ain’t feeling what I see
There’s no mystery
Whatever happened to a passion I could live for?
What became of the flame that made me feel more?
And when did I forget
That I was made to love you?
I was made to find you
I was made just for you, made to adore you
I was made to love and be loved by you
You were here before me
You were waiting on me
And you said you’d keep me
Never would you leave me
I was made to love and be loved by you
I urge you today to spend time there, in the cleft of the Rock, protected, inspired and loved. Know what you were made to do!
Blessings to you!
